The Pays d’Aix, the Alpilles mountains, Cassis…
Provence in all it splendour!
You can’t stay in Aix-en-Provence without admiring the nearby Sainte-Victoire mountain (about 5 km from our hotel). Now classified as a “Grand Site de France”, and a symbol of Provence, it can be explored along trails lined with dry-stone walls. Sainte-Victoire was Cézanne’s muse almost all his life. He painted it tirelessly, constantly choosing different viewpoints around Tholonet and Bibémus. To see all these landscapes and their majestic panoramas, the best option is to take the Tholonet road from Aix and then head for Saint Antonin sur Bayon: there are information boards along the way indicating where Cézanne liked to set up his easel.
Aix-en-Provence is also the ideal base for exploring Cassis, its renowned vineyards, and the Calanques. After a car journey of less than 40 minutes, you’ll be paddling in the Mediterranean! Go to Cassis to enjoy the charms of a refined and colourful little fishing port, the character of the AOC wines cultivated on its hillsides, and the spectacular Calanques – mini fjords along the coast towards Marseille.
If you prefer the landscapes of inland Provence, head for the Alpilles mountains and Les Baux de Provence, yet another of Frances “Most Beautiful Villages”. Perched on a rocky peak, it offers unbroken views of the Camargue and Provence.
