Opportunities for escape in Marseille
The Mediterranean, just half an hour from Aix-en-Provence
Marseille, France’s second-largest and oldest city, is a vast stage packed with colour and flavour! Close to our hotel, just 30 km from Aix-en-Provence, it is a must-see destination in its own right. First called Massalia, and perfumed with eastern fragrances, it is a fabulous city whose neighbourhoods climb and descend the hillsides. Marseille is surrounded by pine forests, limestone rocks and garrigue.
A city of art and culture, Marseille has a never-ending array of wonders to share with you. Founded 26 centuries ago, it combines tradition and modernity. The unmissable sights: The cathedral of Notre Dame de la Garde or “La Bonne Mère” as it is known in Marseille, the historic la Canebière high street in the old quarter, the Vieux-Port for its cafés, restaurants and their terraces, le Panier (the oldest neighbourhood in Marseille) for its narrow streets and the Vieille Charité museum, the Vallon des Auffes for its charmingly authentic port, the Corniche for its dreamlike views over the sea, Mucem (the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations), Fort Saint Jean, Les Terrasses du Port shopping centre, L’Estaque and the painters who it inspired…
To extend your visit to Marseille beyond the Vieux-Port or Mucem, you must take a boat trip to discover the Frioul islands and the Château d’If (the setting for “The Count of Monte-Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas), and of course the Calanques, natural wonders rising from the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.
