The Luberon and its hilltop villages
50 km from the hotel and Aix-en-Provence, the Luberon is a must-see. Halfway between the Alps and the Mediterranean, this part of Provence has a character all of its own. The mild climate and clear air put the many and varied wonders of the natural landscape in sharp relief: the blue stripes of the lavender fields, the many shades of green in the forests, the breathtaking ochre cliffs, the austere white of the limestone hills.
Dry stone bories (ancient stone houses) and walls, imposing country houses, hilltop villages interspersed with castles and churches: the Luberon offers an amazing range of discoveries in the heart of Provence.
Don’t miss... Lourmarin, one of France’s “Most Beautiful Villages”, set amongst vineyards and olive groves, the hilltop villages of Bonnieux, Gordes, Lacoste, Ménerbes and Roussillon, and the Provençal “Colorado” at Rustrel (the most spectacular ochre landscape).
The Luberon is also home to a magnificent regional natural park with a multitude of natural landscapes and nature reserves, boasting exceptional biodiversity: 1,800 species of plant (35% of flora found in France), including 70 protected by law, 135 species of birds (50%), and 2,300 species of butterfly (40%).
